A direct discussion between the European Nations and Hamas has opened up when America, under the leadership of Barack Obama has intensified the hunt for peace in the Middle East countries.
To begin with, two French senators have gone to Damascus to meet the Palestinian leader Khaled Meshal. Again, two British MPs met with Usamah Hamden, the Hamas delegate of Lebanon in Beirut. According to a European diplomat the communication with Hamas has turned out to be more accessible than anyone actually thought of.
Mr. Hamdan said that the European countries have become conscious about their mistake of blacklisting Hamas as a revolutionary organization. But now they have realized that they have to talk to Hamas. Accordingly, MPs from the Netherlands, Sweden and other west European nations have come over and had meetings with the Hamas representatives.
Under the laws of international Quartet for Middle East Peace (comprising of the UN, the US, the EU and Russia) political links with Hamas are prohibited. But it is expected that with the development of relationship with the US, the policies are likely to change.
